Wehling Transfers to West Alabama

OTTUMWA --- Former Indian Hills Community College volleyball player Carly Wehling has transferred to the University of West Alabama to continue her education and volleyball career.

Wehling, a native of Readlyn, Iowa and a graduate of Wapsie Valley High School, was a two-year starter for Indian Hills and improved her hitting efficiency almost 200 points in her sophomore season for the Warriors. She also set the school single-season record for ace serves with 76 and was the team-leader in kills, averaging nearly three kills per set.

UWA coach Tabitha Turner said, “Carly is going to be a great addition to our lineup. She is an outstanding player and will play a pivotal role as we move this program forward in the coming year.”
West Alabama was 21-11 overall last season and finished fourth in the Gulf South Conference.

Wehling said she liked West Alabama’s campus in Livingston, Ala. “The campus has a small-town feel which I have been used to all my life. The coaching staff at UWA is very easy to relate to and they gave me an opportunity I couldn’t refuse.”

Wehling said the school has an outstanding athletic training program which is what she plans on studying.

Indian Hills coach Lyndsey Lyon expects Wehling to continue to improve at the next level. “Carly was a great asset to our team,” said Lyon. “She was strong as a passer and hitter and was our go-to player at crucial times. She was a leader on the court and academically, and she’ll be a great fit for UWA next fall.”

Wehling also had a successful high school career, earning first-team all-conference honors three times and playing on teams that won back-to-back state titles.

Warriors' Bid for National Tourney Berth Ends

Council Bluffs -- After winning their two matches in pool play in the District D tournament in impressive fashion, the Indian Hills Warriors were primed to spring an upset against defending district champ Iowa Western in Sunday's title match.

But the Reivers quickly squelched the Warriors' hopes for the upset with a straight-set win. Iowa Western advanced to the national tournament, beating the Warriors, 25-14, 25-17 and 25-22.

The match ended the IHCC coaching career of the Warriors' Terry Carlson, who had announced earlier in the week that he would retire at the end of the season.

"I told the girls that I couldn't have had a better group of girls for my final Indian Hills team," Carlson said on Sunday. "We never let the circumstances get us down. Even in the final loss, we had girls step up and make big plays. You can't ask for more than that from a team."

In the match with the Reivers, Carly Wehling, playing her last match for IHCC, led the team with eight kills. Jessi Black and Emily Eswonia, a pair of freshmen, each had 10 digs and Kelsey Wagner, another sophomore, had three blocks.

On Saturday, Indian Hills took care of two Illinois schools -- Lake Land and John A. Logan -- in three sets each. The scores against Lake Land were 25-21, 25-23 and 25-20. The JAL scores were 25-20, 25-23 and 25-17.

Wehling had 13 kills in the first match and 10 against JAL. Eswonia had 13 digs in each match. Setter Ailime Conglaves had 30 assists in both matches.

The Warriors end the season with a 23-20 record.

Final Home Match Results in Win

Ottumwa -- The Indian Hills volleyball team sent retiring coach Terry Carlson out in style in his final home match, sweeping visiting Marshalltown CC at the Net Center on Wednesday night.

Carlson, who was honored in a ceremony at the conclusion of the match, saw his squad polish off the Tigers in three sets, winning 25-20, 25-12 and 25-18.

It was also Sophomore Night for the Warriors and the three sophs all played a key part in the Warriors' 21st win of the season.

One of the sophomores, Carly Wehling, led IHCC with 10 kills and she added nine digs. Classmate Kelsey Wagner had eight kills and five blocks, including three straight blocks in the second set. The other soph, Erin Mosinski, recorded six kills and two digs.

Freshman Emily Eswonia also came up big for IHCC with seven kills and a team-high 20 digs.

The Warriors now head to Council Bluffs this weekend for the District D tournament. They open with pool play on Saturday, taking on both Lake Land and John A. Logan. The championship match is slated for Sunday.

Revenge: Warriors Sweep Kirkwood

Cedar Rapids, IA -- Indian Hills scored the final four points of the opening set and used that rally as a springboard to a sweep of Kirkwood CC on Wednesday night.

Carly Wehling had three kills as the Warriors made up a 22-21 deficit at the end of the first set and won it, 25-22. IHCC went on to take the next two sets, 25-20 and 25-15, to gain some measure of revenge for an earlier loss to Kirkwood.

Indian Hills coach Terry Carlson said it was the Warriors' best match of the season. "We played with a lot of enthusiasm. We have everybody back and healthy and it makes a big difference."

Wehling had 17 kills to lead the Warriors' attack. Emily Eswonia added eight and had a team-leading 12 digs. Arika Johnson had half of IHCC's eight blocks.

With the win, Indian Hills is now 20-16 for the season. The Warriors will play three matches in the Jefferson College Invitational this Friday and Saturday.

Fast Start Leads to IHCC Sweep

Marshalltown, IA -- A fast start in the opening set fueled a three-set sweep for the Indian Hills volleyball team at Marshalltown Tuesday night.

The Warriors jumped out to a 22-2 lead in the first set and cruised to a 25-8 win. The next two sets were much more difficult, but the Warriors completed the sweep, winning 25-22 and 26-24.

Carly Wehling had another big night for Indian Hills, leading the Warriors with 16 kills, 15 digs and five ace serves. Kelsey Wagner returned to the IHCC lineup after being idle for the last two weeks with a sprained ankle and she contributed three kills.

Indian Hills has won six of its last seven matches and is 19-15 for the season. The Warriors take on Iowa Lakes at the Net Center on Wednesday night.

Warriors Win Three in Fort Dodge

Fort Dodge, IA -- The Indian Hills Warriors came close to sweeping through the Iowa Central Invitational over the weekend, but couldn't close out the final match and lost to the host school.

IHCC posted wins over Cloud County and Ellsworth CC on Friday and then defeated the Clarke JV in five sets on Saturday. The Warriors won the first two sets against Iowa Central in the next match, but the Tritons stormed back to win the final three sets, taking the fifth set, 15-11.

Friday's play featured the second win against Ellsworth in as many days. Like the night before, when Indian Hills downed the Panthers on IHCC's home court, it was a struggle, however.

After the Warriors won the opening set, Ellsworth took the next two. Indian Hills rallied to win the next two sets, 25-22 and 15-11.

The opening contest on Friday wasn't as difficult for Indian Hills as the Warriors quickly disposed of Cloud County, winning by scores of 25-14, 25-18 and 25-17.

Carly Wehling with nine kills, Jessi Black with nine digs, Arika Johnson with four blocks and Erin Mosinski with four ace serves were the statistical leaders for IHCC.

Wehling had a team-high 21 kills in the Ellsworth match while Emily Eswonia had 20 digs and three blocks.

Wehling had two strong matches on Saturday with 26 kills against Clarke and 22 more in the Iowa Central match. She also had four ace serves against the Tritons and 21 digs in that battle.

Indian Hills is now 18-15 for the season. The Warriors will play at Marshalltown on Tuesday night and come home to take on Iowa Lakes on Wednesday.

Indian Hills Rallies to Beat Ellsworth

Ottumwa -- The Indian Hills Warriors used a late third-set rally to take control of the match and the Warriors defeated visiting Ellworth CC, 3-1, on Thursday night at the Net Center.

Ellsworth led in each of the first three sets, and even rallied to tie the score after IHCC took a 5-0 lead in the fourth set. But the Warriors pulled away to win that set, 25-15, and claim the match.

Ellsworth jumped out to a 15-5 lead in the opening set. Indian Hills battled all the way back, despite eight hitting errors, to finally take the lead. The Warriors had two set points before Carly Wehling finally ended it with a kill.

But the Warriors couldn't take advantage of the momemtum they had seemingly gained in that 27-25 first set win as the Panthers jumped out to a 17-10 lead in the second set and won it, 25-19. Six service errors hurt the Warriors.

Indian Hills found itself trailing 21-17 late in the third set as ECC looked to take control of the match. But IHCC setter Ailime Conglaves found an open spot in the Ellsworth defense for two tip winners, Wehling picked up back-to-back kills and Arika Johnson's block allowed IHCC to pull out a 28-26 win. Johnson had a team-high eight blocks for the match.

With the score tied at 11-all in the fourth set, Victoria Ita gave Indian Hills a spark with an eight-point service run and the Warriors were able to secure the win.

Wehling and Jessi Black each had 12 digs for the Warriors and Wehling led with 10 kills.

Indian Hills goes to Fort Dodge to play in Iowa Central's tournament on Friday and Saturday.

Indian Hills Picks Up Win Against DMACC

Boone, IA -- After losing their first match of the day to MCC-Longview, coach Terry Carlson's IHCC volleyball squad desperately needed something positive to happen for his team. He got that in the form of a victory against the host school in the DMACC Invitational.

The Warriors had lost six straight matches, including a tough five-set defeat to DMACC last month, and had dropped their first three in this tourney when they lined up to play the host Bears on Saturday afternoon.

"I talked to the girls after the Longview loss," said Carlson, "and I told them I thought we needed to have some more enthusiasm out there and have a little more fun."

Indian Hills had fun in a three-set sweep of DMACC, winning 25-23, 25-17 and 25-22, to even their season mark at 14-14.

Carly Wehling continued her strong net play for Indian Hills, leading the Warriors in kills in both matches on Saturday, as she had the day before. Wehling pounded 13 kills against Longview and 11 against DMACC. She also had three ace serves in the opening match and a team-high 10 digs against the Bears.

Indian Hills returns home to take on Ellsworth CC on Thursday night.

Warriors Drop First Two Matches at DMACC

Boone, IA -- Indian Hills lost to Parkland (IL) and Iowa Central on Friday in the first day of the DMACC Invitational.

Parkland swept the Warriors, winning by scores of 25-17, 25-20 and 25-21. After dropping the first set to Iowa Central, Indian Hills won the second set, 25-23. Iowa Central then came back and won 25-23 and 25-16 to close out the match.

Sophomore Carly Wehling led Indian Hills in kills in both matches with six against Parkland and 14 in the Iowa Central matchup. Wehling also had a team-high 14 digs in the first match and 15 in the second.

The Warriors will take on MCC-Longview and DMACC on Saturday.

Warriors Suffer Road Loss at Iowa Western

Council Bluffs, IA -- In a match that was similar to the first meeting between the schools, Iowa Western pulled out all three sets on the way to a 3-0 win over Indian Hills on the Reivers' home court Tuesday.

Iowa Western won by scores of 25-20, 25-18 and 25-22 in completing a season sweep over the Warriors.

Indian Hills had an 18-15 lead in the third set, but couldn't hold on.

The Warriors were playing without injured starters Erin Mosinski and Kelsey Wagner.

Carly Wehling had 10 kills and Emily Eswonia a like number of digs to lead Indian Hills.

The Warriors will play in the DMACC Invitational this Friday and Saturday.

Eswonia is Conference Player of the Week

Ottumwa -- Indian Hills freshman Emily Eswonia is the latest Iowa Community Collge Athletic Conference Division I Volleyball Athlete of the Week.

Eswonia, an outside hitter from Tempe, Arizona, was honored for her play in the Warriors' wins against the William Penn JV and Ellsworth CC in late September.

She had a hitting efficiency of .400 with 20 kills in those two matches. Eswonia also recorded 23 digs, five ace serves and six block assists as the Warriors won both matches, dropping only one set.

Injury Hurts Warriors' Chances Vs. DMACC

Ottumwa -- The Indian Hills Warriors were only six points away from a possible straight-sets victory over DMACC at the Net Center on Thursday night. But that's when IHCC sophomore Kelsey Wagner suffered a sprained ankle, an injury that appeared to turn the match around.

Even after Wagner's injury, the Warriors still served a match point in the third set, but the Bears won that point and the next two to extend the match, winning 26-24.

Indian Hills had taken the first two sets, 25-23 and 25-19. After a close decision in the first set, IHCC opened up a 10-point lead in the second set and Carly Wehling ended it with one of her team-high 13 kills.

After staving off defeat in set three, DMACC rolled in the fourth set, 25-11, and took the match with a 15-8 win in the fifth set.

It was the second five-set loss in three nights for the Warriors who had lost to East Central (MO) on Tuesday.

Jessi Black led the Warriors with 15 digs and Wagner had five blocks before her injury. Kelsey Lyon and Wehling each had five ace serves for Indian Hills, now 13-11 for the season.

The Warriors travel to Council Bluffs to face Iowa Western next Tuesday night.

Split for IHCC Volleyball in Missouri

Canton, MO -- After a three-set sweep over the Culver-Stockton junior varsity, Indian Hills lost a five-set battle to East Central (MO) on Tuesday.

The Warriors rolled over Culver-Stockton, winning by scores of 25-16, 25-13 and 25-18. But they couldn't close out the next match, letting a two sets-to-one lead slip away.

East Central, coached by former IHCC assistant Lisa Mathes-Peters, won the fourth set, 25-21, to even the match at two sets apieca, then took the deciding set, 15-13.

The loss snapped the Warriors' three-match winning streak and left them with a season record of 13-9.

The Warriors were down 14-7 in the fifth set with East Central. Sophomore Kelsey Lyon got IHCC back in contention, serving five straight points. But East Central won the next point and the match.

Against Culver-Stockton, soph Kelsey Wagner pounded 13 kills and sophomore Carly Wehling had eight ace serves and seven digs.

In the second match, Wehling and freshman Emily Eswonia led the team with 11 kills each and Wehling and freshman Jessi Black both had 16 digs. Soph Kelsey Wagner had four blocks in each match.

The Warriors host DMACC at the Net Center on Thursday night at 7:00.

Warriors Thump Ellsworth

Iowa Falls -- It took them a while to get going, but once the Indian Hills volleyball team got warmed up they took rolled to a three-set victory over host Ellsworth on Thursday night.

Three straight service errors for Indian Hills allowed the Panthers to hang around in the first set. The Warriors finally prevailed, 26-24.

Ellsworth managed only 20 total points in the final two sets as IHCC completed the match with scores of 25-12 and 25-8.

Freshman Emily Eswonia had a good all-around performance with 12 digs, 10 kills and five service aces. Sophomore Kelsey Lyon matched Eswonia with five aces. Freshman setter Ailime Conglaves had 23 assists.

Indian Hills' season record is 12-8 and they head to Canton, Missouri next Tuesday for matches against the Culver-Stockton JV and East Central (MO).

Warriors Start Slow, Then Knock Off WP

Ottumwa -- Indian Hills overcame a shoddy first-set performance to defeat the William Penn junior varsity, 3-1, at the Net Center on Monday night.

The Warriors had nine service errors in the opening set, perhaps the result of a six-day layoff, and dropped the set, 25-19.

They regrouped in a hurry, winning the second set, 25-9, and riding Carly Wehling's serving to a 25-11 win in the third set.

Although William Penn led 11-9 in the fourth set, Indian Hills finished strong and closed out the match with a 25-17 decision.

Wehling put on a serving display in the third set. The sophomore went to the service line with IHCC trailing, 5-3, and she served 15 straight points to turn the set around. Included in the service run were five aces and a number of other serves that made it impossible for the visitors to set up their offense.

Wehling wound up with seven aces and added eight kills and eight digs.

Kelsey Wagner pounded 17 kills to lead IHCC in that category. Emily Eswonia had team-highs with 11 digs and three blocks.

Indian Hills upped its season record to 11-7 and will travel to Iowa Falls to battle Ellsworth CC on Thursday night.

Reivers Knock Off Indian Hills

Ottumwa -- Indian Hills had leads in all three sets, but couldn't protect those leads and lost a three-set match to Iowa Western at the Net Center on Tuesday night.

The Warriors were up, 15-11, in the first set, but lost 25-21.

The Reivers' Marchelle Bostic served the final nine points of the second set with Iowa Western pulling away for a 25-14 win.

Indian Hills grabbed a 16-13 lead in the third set, but again couldn't hold on as Iowa Western finished off the sweep.

The team leaders for Indian Hills were Kelsey Wagner in kills with eight, Erin Mosinski with three blocks, Emily Eswonia in digs with 13 and Courtney Blohm with 20 assists.

The Warriors have nearly a week off before taking on the William Penn JV on Sept. 19.

Two More Victories for IHCC

Rochester, MN -- Indian Hills narrowly missed a chance to win the Rochester Invitational on Saturday when the Warriors couldn't convert on set point in the final two sets and lost in the championship match to Madison Area Tech.

The Warriors got to the finals with 2-0 wins against the host team, Rochester CTC, and Ellsworth CC.

Against Madison Area Tech, Indian Hills won the opening set, 25-20, and had a chance to end the match in both the second set, which they lost 25-23, and in the final set when a late lead slipped away and they lost, 16-14.

The Warriors had a different leader in kills in each match. Erin Mosinski had nine against Rochester, Carly Wehling smashed 14 against Ellsworth, and Kelsey Wagner recorded six in the final match.

Wehling paced IHCC in digs in the three matches and Arika Johnson had nine blocks.

Indian Hills is now 10-7 and will return home to take on Iowa Western on Tuesday night.

Warriors Take Two in Minnesota

Rochester, MN -- Indian Hills started play in the Rochester Community and Technical College Invitational on Friday with two wins in three matches.

The Warriors began their day by defeating Central Lakes in straight sets, 25-13 and 25-11, and ended the day the same way with a 2-0 win over Minnesota West, winning 25-21 and 25-9.

The loss came in the middle match when the Warriors let a lead in the third set get away and lost to Madison Area Tech. IHCC lost 25-21, won 26-24 and lost 15-13 in that match.

Freshman Courtney Blohm replaced normal setter Alimie Conglaves and recorded 45 assists on the day.

Three players recorded four kills against Central Lakes and Kelsey Wagner had a team-high eight kills against Madison Area Tech. Kelsey Lyon had five aces in the three matches.

Indian Hills will play three more times in the tourney on Saturday.

Kirkwood Blocks Out Warriors

Ottumwa -- Visiting Kirkwood used strong net play to defeat Indian Hills in four sets at the Net Center on Wednesday night.

After dropping the first set, 25-16, Indian Hills regrouped and evened the match with a 25-17 win in set two. The Warriors broke open a close set thanks to the serving of sophomore Carly Wehling. Wehling served seven straight points as the Warriors opened up an 18-13 lead and IHCC went on to win, 25-17.

Indian Hills outscored the Eagles 9-2 in the third set to grab a 19-15 lead. With IHCC still on top, 21-20, Kirkwood scored the next three points, all on blocks. They went on to win the set, 25-23, and then closed out the match by winning the fourth set, 25-16.

Though disappointed with the loss, Indian Hills coach Terry Carlson saw some bright spots for his squad. "It was a good match, a hard-fought match and the girls really hustled," Carlson said. "If we can learn from losing, learn from our mistakes, we're going to get better."

Freshman Emily Eswonia led IHCC with 11 kills and Wehling had 17 digs. But the Warriors only managed two blocks for the match, compared to Kirkwood's 20.

Next up for Indian Hills is a trip to Rochester, Minnesota for a tournament this weekend. They'll play three matches on Friday and then advance to bracket play on Saturday.

IHCC Nets Two Wins to End Tourney

Estherville, IA -- After losing their first three matches in a three-day trip to northwest Iowa, the Indian Hills Warriors came away with two victories on Saturday, defeating Independence (KS) CC in three straight sets and Casper (WY) CC in a four-set match.

All three sets with Independence were close with the Warriors taking the first one, 25-22, and the third set, 26-24.

Emily Eswonia had a spectacular serving match with 20 ace serves to lead the Warriors. Courtney Blohm had 31 assists and Erin Mosinski a team-high eight kills.

Indian Hills got contributions up and down the lineup in the match with Casper. Kelsey Wagner had 11 kills, Eswonia 17 digs, and Mosinski eight blocks. Jessi Black had three ace serves as the Warriors improved to 6-4 on the season.

Indian Hills will host Kirkwood CC at the Tom Arnold Net Center at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday night and will head to Rochester, Minnesota for a tournament next weekend.

Warriors Go 0-2 to Start Iowa Lakes Tourney

Estherville, IA -- The Indian Hills Warriors saw their season match record drop to 4-4 on Friday when they lost twice in the Iowa Lakes tournament. The Warriors were beaten in four sets by Central (NE) CC and then got swept for the second night in a row by Iowa Lakes, ranked 5th in NJCAA Division II.

IHCC and Central divided the first two sets before the Nebraskans took the next two sets by identical 25-22 scores. Carly Wehling and Emily Eswonia each registered 11 kills for IHCC and Arika Johnson had three blocks. Eswonia was credited with 13 digs and Alime Conglaves had 27 assists.

Against Iowa Lakes, the Warriors led for most of the first set, but wound up losing 25-23. They lost the next two sets, 25-12 and 25-19.

Kelsey Wagner had eight kills and Courtney Blohm, inserted into the lineup as the setter, had 21 assists. Erin Mosinski had four blocks and Jessi Black 11 digs for IHCC.

Indian Hills will end their trip to Estherville with matches against Independence (KS) CC and Casper (WY)CC on Saturday.

No. 5 Iowa Lakes Sweeps IHCC

Estherville, IA -- Indian Hills began a three-day trip to northwest Iowa with a match against Iowa Lakes on Thursday night and the host Lakers swept the visitors in three straight sets. The scores were 25-17, 25-16 and 25-20.

After dropping the first two sets, Indian Hills grabbed a 10-9 lead in the third set. But Iowa Lakes quickly regained the lead with a 4-0 run and closed out the match.

The Warriors will now play four matches in two days in a tournament hosted by Iowa Lakes. IHCC's opponents on Friday will be Central CC from Nebraska and Iowa Lakes.

Warriors Sweep SCC in Home Debut

Ottumwa -- The Indian Hills Warriors made it a successful start to their home season on Monday with a three-set win over visiting Southeastern CC at the Tom Arnold Net Center. The Warriors never trailed in winning the first two sets, 25-14 and 25-19. Southeastern rallied to grab a 14-13 lead in the third set, but IHCC recovered by outscoring SCC, 12-1, to close out the set and the match.

Season Starts with Three Wins at SCC Tourney

West Burlington, IA -- Indian Hills won three of four matches to start the season as the Warriors played in the Southeastern CC Tournament over the weekend. IHCC defeated Cloud County (KS) and Lake Land (IL) CC on Friday, then split a pair of matches on Saturday, losing to Parkland (IL) CC before downing the host Black Hawks.

Against Cloud County, Indian Hills relied on returning sophomores to notch the win in three staight sets (25-13, 25-17, 25-9). Carly Wehling (Readlyn) led the team in kills (11), blocks (3) and digs (8). Two other sophs, Erin Mosinski (Packwood) and Kelsey Lyons (Conesville), had three ace serves each. Freshman setter Ailime Conglaves (Sao Paulo, Brazil) had 29 assists as the Warriors won their season-opener.

Conglaves had 36 more assists as IHCC defeated Lake Land. The teams split the first two sets before Indian Hills won the next two by scores of 25-19 and 25-21.

Freshman Jessi Black (Ottumwa) had 11 digs, Wehling had 12 kills and sophomore Kelsey Wagner (Carroll) had 11 while Mosinski recorded four ace serves.

Parkland dealt the Warriors their first loss in Saturday's opening match, winning in three sets. Wehling had a team-high 11 kils and eight digs. Freshman Emily Eswonia (Tempe, AZ) also had eight digs.

Indian Hills then bounced back with a three-set win against Southeastern (25-16, 25-12, 25-17).

Freshman setter Courtney Blohm (Monroe, MI) piled up 17 assists. Mosinski had eight kills and Wagner three blocks to lead IHCC in those categories. And Lyons had six ace serves.

IHCC coach Terry Carlson was pleased with the way his team responded in the opening weekend, saying "All in all, it was a good weekend. We couldn't handle Parkland's offensive strategy in our match with them, but we'll go back to work and get that straightened out. It was a good start to the season."

Indian Hills opens the home schedule against Southeastern at the Net Center on Monday night.

Future Set for Warrior Volleyball Players

Ottumwa -- Three members of last year’s Indian Hills Community College volleyball team are headed to four-year schools in the fall to continue their educations and volleyball careers, according to IHCC coach Terry Carlson.

Wynter Davis is headed to Charleston Southern University in South Carolina, Chelsey Taylor is going to Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant and Mariah Hopkins will attend Buena Vista University in Storm Lake.

“I am happy anytime one of our athletes gets a chance to continue playing at the next level,” said Carlson, “and I’m sure these three ladies will all be key contributors on their new teams.”

Recruiting Class Taking Shape for IHCC Volleyball

Ottumwa -- Indian Hills Community College volleyball coach Terry Carlson is putting the finishing touches on his 2011 recruiting class. To date, Carlson has signed eight players and two others have agreed to join the IHCC program as walk-ons.

“One of our goals this recruiting season,” Carlson said, “was to increase team numbers and have multiple players at each position. We feel like we accomplished that.”

The members of the recruiting class, along with comments from the IHCC head coach, are:

Jessi Black, a 5’9” OH/DS from Ottumwa; “Jessi is an intense and determined player whom I have watched develop through her matches and attending my camps. I look forward to utilizing her passing skills. What impresses me is her passion for competing.”

Seanie Popp, a 5’10” MB from Adel, Ia.; “Seanie has above-average jumping ability and a powerful arm. She missed most of her senior season because of an illness so she may have some catching up to do. She played in the off-season for one of my former players, Tina Kruckenberg.”

Kelsey Wagner, a 5’10” MB from Carroll, Ia., who will transfer from Ellsworth CC where she was a first-team all-region performer as a freshman; “Kelsey is a strong middle attacker who will have the advantage of having played a full season of college volleyball.”

Courtney Blom, a 5’10” setter from Monroe, Michigan; “Courtney has great hands and can run a multiple offense. Playing soccer has helped her to develop great footwork. She was referred to us by a former Indian Hills student now living in Michigan.”

Emily Eswonia, a 5’10” OH from Tempe, Arizona; “Emily is going to be a nice all-around player for us. She has played a lot nationally with a USA club team. She is quick to the ball and can really jump.”

Andrea Soriano, a 5’9” OH from the Dominican Republic; “Andrea is a member of the Dominican Republic Junior National team and is currently practicing with her country’s national team. Her junior team won the gold medal at a tournament in Cuba in 2010. She is a very solid outside hitter who should be a nice complement to Eswonia.”

Ailime Gonzalez, a 5’8” setter from Brazil; “Ailime played for the top youth club in Sao Paulo. With her experience playing all over Brazil and internationally, Ailime should battle for the starting setter position.”

Deborah Ngotle, a 5’10” OH from Kenya; “Deborah is a friend of former IHCC All-American Jebet Sang. She played for the top club team in Kenya and is a versatile player who can play any of the front row positions.”

McKenzie Steinbrook, a 5’6” DS from West Burlington, Ia.; “McKenzie has extensive club volleyball experience and will add to our defensive depth.”

Victoria Ita, a 6’0” RS from Burlington, Ia.; “Victoria is a left-handed right-side player who played for the Iowa Rockets club team, along with Jessi Black, and knows what it takes to play at a high level. She should improve our blocking.”

Both Steinbrook and Ita will be walk-ons for the 2011 season.

“We will be very young this fall,” said Carlson, “but we will return three players in Carly Wehling, Erin Mosinski and Kelsey Lyons who are very capable of leading the team in the right direction. We are still looking at adding one more player to fill out the recruiting class.”

Coach Carlson Sets Summer Camp Dates

Ottumwa -- Indian Hills Community College volleyball coach Terry Carlson has released the dates and times for his summer instructional camp.
The camp will be held June 13-16 in the Tom Arnold Net Center on the IHCC Ottumwa campus.

There will be three sessions: one for those in grades 7 and 8 from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. each day; one for grades 9-12 from 10 a.m. to noon; and another session for grades 4-6 from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The cost to attend is $35 if registration is paid before June 1. It will be $45 after June 1. There is a reduced price for those in grades 4-6 – they will pay $25 before June 1 and $35 after that date.

In addition to instruction in all areas of volleyball, each participant will receive a camp t-shirt.

Ottumwa -- Indian Hills volleyball player Wynter Davis has been named the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference Volleyball Athlete of the Week. Davis, a sophomore from Omaha, Nebraska, was recognized for her play in the Warriors’ six matches during the final week of the regular season.

A middle blocker, Davis had 68 kills, a hitting efficiency of .369, 15 block assists and nine ace serves in those matches against some tough competition.

The two-year starter leads the Warriors in kills and blocks this season.

Indian Hills will play in the District D tournament in Carbondale, Illinois this weekend. The Warriors will open the double-elimination tourney against the host school, John A. Logan, at 4:30 Friday afternoon. Iowa Western and three Illinois schools will join Indian Hills in the tourney. The winner of the district tournament advances to the NJCAA Division I National Tournament in West Plains, Missouri Nov. 17-20.

Warriors Overcome Slow Start, Beat SCC

Ottumwa -- After dropping the first set, the Indian Hills volleyball team stormed back to defeat visiting Southeastern CC, 3-1, at the Tom Arnold Net Center Tuesday night. The win moves the Warriors' season record to 8-8 in their first of four straight home matches.

The Warriors jumped out to a quick 8-1 lead in the opening set, but lost their edge and the BlackHawks recovered, thanks to 10 service points by Taylor Delaney, and won the set, 26-24.

Indian Hills was able to regroup in the second set, leading all the way in a 25-18 set.

The third set was the most lopsided of the evening with the Warriors winning, 25-11. Lizzy White, who was a perfect 7-for-7 serving in the second set, was good on 7-of-8 serves in the third set.

The scored was tied once in the final set at 10-all. Indian Hills pulled away for a 25-18 win. Bibiany Hammes served four straight points as IHCC widened their lead and Carly Wehling's kill ended the match.

Wehling had five aces and five blocks, Wynter Davis nine kills, Hammes 29 assists and Mariah Hopkins 23 digs to lead the Warriors in those categories.

Indian Hills will host the Central College junior varsity at 7:00 Thursday night.

Warriors Rally for Road Win

Marshalltown -- Down 2-0 after the first two sets, Indian Hills regrouped and came away with a road victory on Thursday night, downing Marshalltown CC 3-2.

The only set that was decided by more than four points was the final one, which IHCC won 15-10. Marshalltown took the first two sets, 25-22 and 25-23; Indian Hills recovered to win 25-21 and 25-23 in the next two sets.

Warriors coach Terry Carlson said, "We got ourselves in a hole and just kept working at it until we pulled it out."

Wynter Davis was a big part of the IHCC comeback recording a match-high 21 kills. Davis also had a team-high three blocks.

Bibiany Hammes had 42 assists for IHCC. Mariah Hopkins and Lizzy White each had 23 digs.

Indian Hills is now 6-5 for the season and travels to Council Bluffs to take on Iowa Western on Monday night.

Warriors Back on Track with Sweep

Ottumwa -- The Indian Hills volleyball team did its best to recover from a disappointing trip to Wyoming last weekend with a 3-0 win over Ellsworth CC at the Tom Arnold Net Center on Wednesday night.

IHCC (5-5) lost three of four matches at a tournament in Cheyenne last Friday and Saturday, a trip in which coach Terry Carlson said the Warriors should have gone 3-and-1.

Indian Hills started slowly in all three sets against Ellsworth, trailing early in each one. They were behind 4-0 in the opening set before a pair of aces by Wynter Davis put IHCC on top for the first time at 6-5.

Mariah Hopkins served four straight points to give the Warriors a 13-9 lead and IHCC stretched the advantage to the final margin of 25-16.

Indian Hills turned around Ellsworth's 6-2 second-set lead with improved court coverage and some strong serving. Thamara Nunes had three straight service winners late in the set and the Warriors won 25-18.

The third set was the most competitive of the night. Ellsworth took a 22-20 lead only to see Indian Hills score the final five points of the set to complete the sweep. Davis' kill ended the set and match, one of three big kills the sophomore had in the third set.

Davis had a team-high six kills for the match while Carly Wehling had five. Bibiany Hammes recorded 31 assists and Jonte Thornton contributed five blocks for IHCC. Hopkins led in digs with 18, three more than Wehling.

Indian Hills returns to action Thursday night at Marshalltown CC.

Warriors Roll in Home Opener

Ottumwa -- Finding the home court to their liking, the Indian Hills volleyball team swept all three sets against the visiting William Penn junior varsity Monday night at the Net Center. The Warriors won the first two sets by identical 25-12 scores and struggled a little before pulling out the third set, 25-20.

The opening set was tight early with the Warriors expanding a 7-5 lead on the strength of five straight service points by Mariah Hopkins. IHCC closed out the set with four straight service points by Carly Wehling and a winner by Thamara Nunes.

In the second set, Indian Hills had a slim 14-12 advantage when Chelsey Taylor served 11 straight points on a variety of serves to close out the visitors.

IHCC was unable to take the lead for good in the final set until the Warriors went up 20-19. It was 21-20 when the Warriors tallied the final four points to close out the Statesmen.

Wehling, Hopkins and Taylor each had three ace serves for IHCC. Wynter Davis and Wehling led in kills with five apiece. Setter Bibiany Hammes had 24 assists and Nunes led the team with 19 digs.

Indian Hills will take a 3-2 season record on the road this week as the Warriors travel to Cheyenne, Wyoming for a tournament hosted by Laramie County CC. They'll play two matches on Friday and two more on Saturday. Indian Hills returns home to face Ellsworth CC on Sept. 8.

Volleyball Squad to Scrimmage Saturday

Ottumwa -- The 2010 Indian Hills volleyball team makes its first public appearance of the season this Saturday (Aug. 14) when the Warriors take on a group of former IHCC players in a scrimmage at the Tom Arnold Net Center, starting at 2 p.m.

The former IHCC volleyball standouts who will be returning for the scrimmage include: Jill Hoeck ('06 graduate), Beth Mathes ('05), Abbie (Hinton) Meyer ('02), Caylee Meyer ('04), Bianca (Hendricks) Myers ('02), Peggy Ploeger ('04), Michelle (Sieler) Schiller ('04), Rachel Shockey ('03) and Jodi Weeber ('02).

Coach Terry Carlson's Warriors will open the season at a tournament hosted by Southeastern Community College in West Burlington Aug. 27-28. The home opener is against the William Penn junior varsity Aug. 30.

A reception will be held for volleyball alumni and friends following this Saturday's scrimmage.

IHCC Volleyball Recruits are Announced

Ottumwa -- Indian Hills Community College volleyball coach Terry Carlson has released the names of six recruits who will join the IHCC program this fall. In addition, Carlson said two area high school products will join the team as walk-ons.

Those players who have signed letters-of-intent with the Warriors include Carly Wehling, a 5-10 outside hitter from Wapsie Valley HS. Wehling’s team qualified for the state tournament all four years of her high school career, winning the state title in 2007. She was a Class 2A second-team All-State choice as a senior.

“Carly knows what it takes to be successful, coming from a great high school program,” said Carlson. “I have had the opportunity to watch her play during the club volleyball season and I feel she will make an immediate impact with the Warriors.”

Kelsey Lyons is a 5-9 right-side/ outside hitter from Columbus Junction HS. She was All-Conference as a junior and senior and played on the Iowa Rockets club team. Carlson described Lyons as “an all-around good athlete who will continue to improve because of her great attitude.”

Also joining the Warriors in the fall will be Tayler Hosey, a 5-9 right-side player from Tulsa, Oklahoma who played at Ft. Scott CC in Kansas last fall. Hosey averaged 1.4 kills and 1.9 digs per set at Ft. Scott and was named to the all-tournament team at the Grizzly Invitational. “Tayler will help us with the experience she gained last fall,” said Carlson, “She also played for a club team that performed well at a number of major junior tournaments last year.”

Carlson’s recruiting class also includes two players from Sao Paulo, Brazil, Bibiany Hammes and Thamara Nunes.

Hammes is a setter who has already drawn interest from a number of Division I schools. In the video of the future Warrior that he has seen, Carlson said she does an excellent job of using her hitters.

Nunes can be used as an outside hitter or defensive specialist. She was recommended to Carlson by one of his former players, Hayvolla Leite, who was an All-American for IHCC. “Thamara participated on a second-level club team in Brazil, which means she has faced some great competition,” the IHCC coach said. “Her athleticism will be an asset for us.”

Jonte Thornton’s signing was announced earlier by Carlson. She is a 5-10 outside hitter from Washington (Iowa) HS.

Marissa Barton from Ottumwa HS and Erin Molinski of Pekin HS are expected to join the Warriors as walk-ons in the fall. Both will compete for playing time as they get used to the speed of play at the next level, according to Carlson.

The Indian Hills coach indicated he would still like to sign one more player this spring.

Seven Warrior Netters on Academic Honor Squad

Ottumwa -- Seven members of the 2009 Indian Hills Community College volleyball team have been named to the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference All-Academic team for their performance in the classroom this year.

Four IHCC players were named to the conference's All-Academic first team. They are sophomores Timmi Lueck and Gabby Zeller and freshmen Kelsey Nelson and Lizzy White.

Three more players -- sophomores Patrice Souza and Tahler Johnston and freshman Kersten Phillips -- were named to the ICCAC All-Academic second team.

In addition, Lueck was named a Distinguished Academic All-American for her superior grade point average.

And the Warrior volleyball squad was honored as a National Junior College Athletic Association All-Academic team for 2009 with a squad GPA of over 3.0.

Thornton Signs With IHCC

Ottumwa -- Jonte Thornton, a three-year starter on the Washington HS volleyball team, has signed a letter of intent to attend Indian Hills and play for the Warriors.

Thornton, playing for coach Jeff Spenner, was named all-conference for the past three seasons. She compiled some impressive numbers with 645 kills, 238 blocks and 99 service aces for the Demons.

Thornton is expected to be an outside hitter for the Warriors. She is described by IHCC coach Terry Carlson as "a good athlete who is big and strong." Carlson said, "We are looking for kids who can hit the ball hard and Jonte fills that bill."

Warriors Have Two on All-Region Squad

Ottumwa -- Indian Hills placed two players on the Division I All-Region volleyball team announced this week by the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference.

Sophomores Tahler Johnston from Marshalltown and Patricia Souza from Ipatinga, Brazil were the IHCC players honored on the All-Region team.

Johnston led the Warriors in kills and hitting percentage during the 2009 season. She was also second in service acrs and fourth in digs.

Souza was a close second to Johnston in both kills and hitting percentage and was third on the squad in assists.

IHCC Season Ends at District Tourney

Council Bluffs, IA -- The Indian Hills volleyball team made it through the first day of the District C tournament undefeated, but couldn't win in either of their next two matches and saw their season end on Sunday. The Warriors lost a tough three-set match to top-seeded Iowa Western on Saturday and were defeated by Lake Land College the next day.

Indian Hills had a lead in all three sets against Iowa Western, but the Reivers came back to win all three. An early 3-0 lead in the first set eventually disappeared and Iowa Western won 25-22. IHCC was on top 17-12 in the second set and still led, 23-22, after a kill by Patrice Souza. Souza had another winner to tie the score at 24-all, before the Reivers scored the next two points to take the set 26-24. The Warriors really wounded themselves with seven service errors in the set.

The only lead IHCC managed in the third set was 1-0. Iowa Western roared back with eight straight points and closed out the match, 25-19.

Souza and Tahler Johnston had 12 and 11 kills, respectively, for the Warriors and Johnston and Kersten Phillips each had three blocks in the match.

In the match with Lake Land, Indian Hills got routed, 25-11 in the first set. They rallied to win the second set, 26-24, scoring the final three points of the set, but dropped the next two sets.

Souza again led in kills with 12. Wynter Davis had six blocks.

Indian Hills ended the season with a 15-13 record. Iowa Western had an easy win over Lake Land in the next match to take the district title.

Good Start to Postseason for IHCC Netters

Council Bluffs, IA -- It was a good first day at the District C volleyball tournament on Friday for the Indian Hills Warriors. The Warriors defeated both Kaskaskia and John A. Logan to advance to the second day of the three-day tourney without a loss. Next up is top-seed Iowa Western at 2:00 Saturday afternoon.

The Warriors downed Kaskaskia in five sets, winning the decisive set 17-15. After dropping the opening set, 27-25, IHCC rallied to win the next two, 25-19 and 25-21. Kaskaskia stayed alive with a 25-23 win in the fourth set.

Patrice Souza had a strong performance at the net with a team-high 20 kills for IHCC. Kersten Phillips had 13 kills and Tahler Johnston 12. Taylor Woebbeking had 51 assists and Timmi Lueck and Lizzy White combined for 63 digs.

Against John A. Logan, the Warriors won convincingly, 25-16, 25-17 and 25-20. Johnston led in kills with nine and Lueck had 19 digs.

Indian Hills' season record is 15-11 heading into the match with Iowa Western.

Volleyball Squad Prepares for District Tourney

Ottumwa -- Indian Hills will join four Illinois schools and the host school, Iowa Western, in this weekend’s District C volleyball tournament. The winner of the three-day, six-team tourney will qualify for the NJCAA Division I National Tournament, which will also be played in Council Bluffs.
Indian Hills will open the district tournament against Kaskaskia College at 4:00 on Friday afternoon. A win would put the Warriors in the 6:00 match that day against John A. Logan College, the second seed. If IHCC loses, they wouldn’t play again until noon on Saturday. It’s a double-elimination format.
The teams in the bracket opposite Indian Hills are Iowa Western, the number-one seed, and Lake Land and Black Hawk, both from Illinois.
Indian Hills coach Terry Carlson says Iowa Western is “the odds-on favorite” and the other five teams appear to be pretty evenly matched.
“We are finally healthy and should have everyone available for the weekend,” Carlson said. The Warriors, who have a season record of 13-11, battled illness and injury for the latter part of the regular season.
Carlson offered an optimistic assessment of the tourney, saying, “If we can continue to eliminate silly errors, we should be able to get to the finals. We need to get leadership from our sophomores as they all have been through the process of trying to qualify for the national championships.” The IHCC coach added, “The intensity level has to be up all weekend.”
The Warriors made it to the finals in last year’s district tournament. They defeated Iowa Western, but then, playing their third straight match, lost to the Reivers in the title match.

Warriors Start Fast, But Fall in Four

Ottumwa, IA -- The Indian Hills volleyball team got off to a fast start Wednesday in their final regular season home match against No. 6-ranked Iowa Western, but the Reivers came storming back to win 3-1.

Playing inspired volleyball in the opening set, the Warriors broke away from a 14-all tie and went on to win the set 25-20. Two straight blocks off IWCC kill attempts gave Indian Hills the lead for good. Patrice Souza followed with one of the many huge hits she had on the night for another point and the Warriors went on to finish off the visitors.

Tahler Johnston served four straight points and IHCC roared away to an early 5-0 lead in the second set. At that point, Iowa Western was able to regroup. The Reivers forged a 10-10 tie and Lacey Alexander's ace serve gave them the lead. With the set even at 11, Iowa Western ran off five straight points.

Iowa Western took set two 25-17 and won the third set 25-14, despite an early 2-0 lead for IHCC. Indian Hills' 3-1 lead in the third set quickly disappeared and the Warriors didn't lead again. Iowa Western was on top throughout the fourth set. Indian Hills got as close as two points twice, but couldn't get any closer. Kersten Phillips had three blocks in the final set for the Warriors.

Johnston and Souza led IHCC with five kills each. Taylor Woebbeking had 39 assists from the setter position. Phillips and Wynter Davis each had seven blocks and Timmi Lueck had 25 digs to lead in that category.

The loss snapped a four-match win streak for the Warriors who will play in Jefferson College's tournament this weekend.

IHCC Makes Marshalltown Latest Victim

Ottumwa, IA -- Indian Hills rans its current winning streak to a season-high four matches with a 3-0 win over Marshalltown CC at the Tom Arnold Net Center Wednesday night. The visitors led early in all three sets, but the Warriors had enough firepower to come back and take every set.

MCC took a quick 5-4 lead in the opening set before the Warriors got untracked. Freshman Taylor Woebbeking served five straight points to open up some breathing room for IHCC and the Warriors took the set 25-17.

The second set was the tightest of the night. Marshalltown ran away to a 7-2 lead only to see Indian Hills tie it at 7-all. The set was tied seven more times, the last at 23-23. The Warriors got the last two points on winners by Patrice Souza and Tahler Johnston. Souza had six kills in the set and a team-high 11 for the match.

Marshalltown again grabbed an early lead in the third set. Their 5-4 advantage didn't last long however. IHCC went on top on a kill by Souza and never gave up the lead in closing out the match. MCC made it interesting though with back-to-back aces by Vitoria Oliveira to climb to
within 22-20. Freshman Kelsey Nelson served the final points for the Warriors.

Woebbeking had 30 assists to lead IHCC. Wynter Davis had six blocks and Timmi Lueck had 15 digs.

Indian Hills has a season record of 12-8 and is idle until taking on Iowa Western in the final regular-season home match on Oct. 21.

Win Streak to Three After Road Win

Oskaloosa, IA -- The Indian Hills volleyball team, still undermanned because of the flu, still managed to come away with a 3-0 victory over the William Penn JV on Monday night. The Warriors were without regular setter Taylor Woebbeking so Patrice Souza and Gabby Zeller shared most of the setting duties. Zeller had 13 assists and Souza 10 as the Warriors improved their season record to 11-8 with their third straight match victory.

Tahler Johnston had a stong all-around match for IHCC with team highs in aces (3), kills (10) and digs (12). Wynter Davis had six blocks and six kills.

Indian Hills coach Terry Carlson was more than happy to escape with the win, saying, "We're still battling the flu, but anytime you get a win it feels good. Wynter Davis played well. She just keeps getting better and better."

Warriors Battle Illness to Down Ellsworth

Iowa Falls, IA -- An Indian Hills volleyball team that was at less than full strength because of a flu bug, still managed to take down Ellsworth CC in three straight sets on Thursday night. The Warriors won 25-19, 25-22 and 25-22 to run their season mark to 10-8.
Sophomore Tahler Johnston led the way for IHCC with a team-high 15 kills and two service aces. Freshman Wynter Davis added eight kills. Freshman setter Taylor Woebbeking had 31 assists, soph Timmi Lueck had 20 digs and freshmen Gabby Zeller and Mariah Hopkins each had three blocks for the Warriors.
Indian Hills will go on the road to take on the William Penn JV next Monday night, then hosts Marshalltown CC on Wednesday.

Warriors Go 1-2 in Home Tourney

Ottumwa -- After tough losses to two talented teams, the IHCC volleyball team recovered to win their final match in the weekend IHCC Classic at the Net Center.

Indian Hills lost a four-set match to, Illinois Central, the No. 3-ranked team in the NJCAA Division II on Friday night. With the first set tied at 12-all, Illinois Central took control, outscoring the Warriors 13-5 to win going away, 25-17. Indian Hills rebounded to take the second set, 25-20.

Coach Terry Carlson said a change he made between the opening two sets made a difference. "We changed our lineup and that gave them a different look," Carlson said. "I think that allowed us to serve in a different rotation and that actually gave them some problems."

Indian Hills trailed 17-16 before rallying to take the set. Gabby Zeller's block provided the final point.

The third set was tied five times, the last at 18-18, before Illinois Central prevailed, 25-21. The Cougars piled up nine kills to win the final set 25-19.

Freshman Wynter Davis topped the Warriors in kills with six and in blocks with seven. Taylor Woebbeking had 25 assists and Timmi Lueck had 16 digs.

On Saturday, The Warriors lost their early match to Seminole State (OK) in four sets before beating the Graceland JV 3-0.

IHCC dropped the first two sets to Seminole State, 25-22 and 25-17. Davis sparked the Warriors in the third set with six kills and three blocks in a 25-15 IHCC win. Seminole State then won the fourth set, 25-14.

In the final match of the tourney, Indian Hills defeated Graceland by scores of 25-10, 25-17 and 25-19. Woebbeking had three consecutive aces in the final set and a total of eight aces for the match. Davis had six blocks against Seminole State and seven against Graceland. Tahler Johnston had eight kills against Graceland.

The Warriors are now 9-8 for the season and play at Ellsworth CC in Iowa Falls on Thursday.

Netters Back on Track

Fort Dodge, IA -- The Indian Hills volleyball team broke a two-match losing streak on Tuesday night with a 3-0 win over Iowa Central CC. The Warriors were playing for the first time in 11 days and came out of the blocks firing on all cylinders, taking the first set, 25-9. The next two sets were much closer, but the Warriors prevailed, 27-25 and 25-18.

IHCC coach Terry Carlson was pleased the way his team performed after the lengthy break. "The first game was probably the best set we've had all season," said Carlson. "We really ran the offense well and had good passing. In the second set, our passing broke down and we were not as efficient. In the third set we played well again."

Patrice Souza led the Warriors in kills with 10, one more than Wynter Davis and two more than Tahler Johnston. Taylor Woebbeking had 29 assists from the setter position. Davis led in blocks with four and Timmi Lueck had 16 digs and Lizzy White had 14.

Indian Hills is right back in action on Wednesday night when the Warriors host Kirkwood CC at the Tom Arnold Net Center at 7:00.

Jefferson Hands IHCC Home Loss

Ottumwa -- Jefferson College came to the Tom Arnold Net Center on Friday night and defeated the homestanding Warriors in four sets. The visitors won the first two sets, 25-22 and 25-19, before the Warriors came back to take the third set, 26-24. Jefferson then closed out the match with a 25-18 win in the fourth set.

The opening set saw IHCC take a 16-15 lead on a block by freshman Wynter Davis. It was tied at 19-all before Jefferson's Elizabeth Reid had a block and a kill to put Jefferson in control. Reid led Jefferson in both categories for the match.

Indian Hills again opened up a lead early in the second set, but Jefferson pulled ahead on the strength of 10 blocks.

The Warriors led virtually the entire third set with strong net play by Tahler Johnston, Patrice Souza and Davis helping IHCC hold on to take the set. Indian Hills scored the final two points to take the set.

But Jefferson rebounded in the final set, taking the lead for good at 3-2 and sewing up the win.

The Warriors registered only 16 kills for the match and did not have a service ace. Setter Taylor Woebbeking picked up 35 assists for IHCC and Davis had 10 blocks. Timmi Lueck had 25 digs for Indian Hills.

IHCC goes to Council Bluffs to take on Region XI foe Iowa Western next Wednesday.

Warriors Roll over Central JV

Pella, IA -- The Indian Hills volleyball team ran its early-season record to 6-1 with a three-set victory over the Central College JV on Tuesday night. The opening set was the tightest of the three with the Warriors taking the set 25-21. The scores of the next two sets were 25-19 and 25-13.
Freshman Taylor Woebbeking had a good night for the Warriors with three ace serves and 25 assists from her setter position. Patrice Souza had eight kills and Wynter Davis and Tahler Johnston added six each. Lizzy White was perfect on 12 serves and had two aces. Souza led the squad in digs with 15.
The Warriors take on Jefferson College at the Net Center in Ottumwa on Friday night at 6:00.

IHCC Makes Quick Work of Ellsworth

Ottumwa, IA -- After being pushed to five sets before posting a win in their home match with Southeastern on Tuesday night, Indian Hills had a much easier time two nights later against visiting Ellsworth CC. The Warriors won three straight games from the Panthers, 25-20, 25-14 and 25-12 on Thursday at the Net Center.
Ellsworth had early leads in two of the three sets, but the Warriors pulled away at the end in both. The Panthers grabbed an early 7-6 advantage in the opening set. Patrice Souza hit a winner to tie the score for IHCC and then served two consecutive points, the second on an ace, to put the Warriors ahead for good. Tahler Johnston's block gave Indian Hills a 23-19 lead and Johnston then ended the set with a perfectly placed tip for a winner.
The Warriors were in control throughout the second set, but ECC again started fast in set three, taking a 9-8 lead. Johnston had five straight service points early in the set for Indian Hills before Ellsworth went on top briefly. Once IHCC took the lead, Souza served six points in a row as the Warriors closed out the set and match by outscoring the Panthers 17-3. Taylor Woebbeking, whose 25 assists led IHCC, served the final five points.
Timmi Lueck and Lizzy White tied for the team lead for Indian Hills with 13 digs apiece. Johnston and Kersten Phillips each had four blocks and Johnston also had four kills.
Indian Hills upped its season record to 5-1 and will be idle until going to Pella to play the Central JV next Tuesday night.

Warriors Get Revenge, Down SCC in Five

Ottumwa --- The Indian Hills volleyball team didn't have to wait long to avenge their only loss early in the 2009 season. The Warriors got their measure of revenge on Tuesday night, winning a tense five-set match with Southeastern CC in the home-opener at the Net Center.
SCC had knocked off Indian Hills in another five-setter last weekend in the finals of the BlackHawks' tournament.

This time around, the Warriors jumped on top 5-1 early in the fifth and deciding set and never trailed in winning the set 15-11.

IHCC started slowly in dropping the opening set, 25-19. IHCC led early, 11-9, before Southeastern rallied. But the Warriors recovered to win the next two sets, 25-22 and 25-20. The serving of Kersten Phillips and strong net play from Tahler Johnston, Patrice Souza and Wynter Davis were the keys in getting Indian Hills untracked. Johnston's kill ended the third set after a Timmi Lueck ace serve put the Warriors ahead 23-20.

But Southeastern refused to go quietly as the visitors battled back to win the fourth set, 25-21.

The Warriors then regrouped in time to take the fifth set and gain some payback for their loss last Saturday. Phillips had her fifth ace serve of the night in the final set, one of nine aces the Warriors recorded during the match.

Johnston led IHCC with 12 kills and she and Lueck tied for the team high with 16 digs apiece. Setter Taylor Woebbeking had 50 assists and Davis led in blocks with six.

Indian Hills, now 4-1 on the season, will host Ellsworth CC at the Net Center at 7:00 on Thursday night.

Warriors Are Second at SCC Tourney

West Burlington, IA -- The Indian Hills volleyball team opened its 2009 season with a second-place finish at the Southeastern Community College/Pzazz Tournament over the weekend. The Warriors won their first three matches before dropping a 3-2 match to the host school in the title match.

Indian Hills posted wins against a couple of Illinois schools on Friday, beating both Prairie State and Springfield, 3-1. Sophomores Patricia Souza and Tahler Johnston led the Warriors at the net with 28 and 25 kills, respectively. Freshman setter Taylor Woebbeking had an impressive debut in her first action for IHCC with 85 assists on the day.

On Saturday, Indian Hills won the semifinal match, beating Highland (KS) CC, 3-1. Johnston had 15 kills and was a perfect 11-for-11 in serving. Freshman Kersten Phillips led the team with four blocks and freshman libero Lizzy White had 33 digs.

SCC won the fifth and deciding set, 18-16, to win the championship match. IHCC won the second set, 25-20, and the fourth set, 25-17. Johnston and Souza each had 14 kills against the BlackHawks, Phillips had seven blocks and Woebbeking piled up 41 assists. Johnston also led the team in digs with 20, one more than White.

The Warriors won't have long to try and avenge the loss to SCC. They'll host Southeastern in the home opener on Tuesday night at 7:00 at the Tom Arnold Net Center.

2008 Season Review

The IHCC volleyball team came up just short in its bid for a district championship in 2008 when they lost in the title match to Iowa Western. That defeat came after the Warriors had beaten IWCC in a thrilling five-set match earlier in the day. Iowa Western was ranked No. 1 in the nation in the Division I poll going into the district tourney.

Indian Hills had beaten Illinois Central, the top-ranked team in Division II, a few weeks prior to the win against IWCC. The Warriors finished the season with a 28-26 record against what was undoubtedly the toughest schedule in the program’s history. Of the 54 matches, 39 were against ranked teams.

Sophomore Karie Downing capped her outstanding two-year career at IHCC by being named a first-team All-American by both the National Junior College Athletic Association and the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Downing set the school record for most kills and blocks in a career and a single season.

Downing and Maira Charun were named to the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference All-Region first team.
