Warriors Drop Hard-Fought 3-Setter

Ottumwa -- The Indian Hills Warriors put a scare into fourth-ranked Iowa Western on Tuesday night, but couldn't come away with a victory, losing in three sets to the Reivers.

The Warriors missed a big chance for some early momentum in the match when they had two set points in the opening set.  But Iowa Western staved off those IHCC opportunities and won the set, 27-25.

With the second set tied at 4-4, the Reivers got a side-out and then Emily Jones served six straight points to give IWCC an 11-4 lead.  The Warriors answered with a five-point run, but wound up losing the set, 25-19.

Indian Hills then jumped out to a 14-8 lead in the third set, only to see Jones' serving again turn things around.  She served six consecutive points and Iowa Western went on to close out the match, winning 25-22.

Although disappointed with the results, IHCC coach Lyndsey Lyon couldn't fault her team's effort, saying, "All in all, our girls played great volleyball.  We were ready for (Iowa Western).  We just fell a little bit short."

Indian Hills was impressive in a lot of areas in the match, especially in keeping rallies alive.  They had 64 digs on the night, Jessi Black leading the way with 17, one more than teammate Emily Eswonia.

IHCC Escapes in Battle With Grand View JV

Ottumwa -- After the first set of Monday's match between Indian Hills and the Grand View JV, it appeared that the Warriors would make quick work of the visiting Vikings.  But Grand View had other ideas and battled the Warriors through three more sets before IHCC prevailed in its 17th win of the season.

Indian Hills took less than 20 minutes to win the first set, 25-8.  But the Vikings came to life after that, losing the second set, 25-20, then winning the third, 25-19, and battling to the end of the fourth set before succumbing, 25-23.  Grand View scored four straight points in that set to get to within a single point at 24-23 before a block by IHCC's Emily Eswonia and Cristiane Vosconsoles ended the set and the match.

The first set was all Indian Hills as the Warriors jumped on the visitors to take a quick 8-1 lead and were never threatened.

IHCC coach Lyndsey Lyon went to her bench in the second set, giving playing time to nearly the entire squad.  But the Warriors lost their rhythm and never did find it the rest of the match.

The Warriors didn't lead in the third set, trailing at one point, 20-11.  And they never did get a comfortable lead in the final set, either.  But they still made enough plays to improve to 17-4 for the season.

Southeastern will come to the Tom Arnold Net Center for a 7 p.m. match on Wednesday night.

Reivers Take Down Warriors

Council Bluffs, IA -- Iowa Western, ranked 5th in the country, won its first matchup of the season with Indian Hills, taking Wednesday's match in three sets, 25-22, 25-16, and 28-26.

As the scores indicate, the Warriors were very competitive in the first and third sets, but had problems in capitalizing on the chances they had at the net.  "Our biggest problem was putting the ball down," said IHCC coach Lyndsey Lyon.  "We struggled a little in that execution.  Iowa Western also caused us to commit a few errors.  They served and hit aggressively."

Cristiane Vosconcoles was a bright spot for Indian Hills.  The freshman had three ace serves, two kills, a team-high five blocks and a dig.  Peyton Crosser led IHCC with eight kills and Emily Eswonia added seven.  Jessi Black had 14 digs.

Wehling Transfers to West Alabama

OTTUMWA --- Former Indian Hills Community College volleyball player Carly Wehling has transferred to the University of West Alabama to continue her education and volleyball career.

Wehling, a native of Readlyn, Iowa and a graduate of Wapsie Valley High School, was a two-year starter for Indian Hills and improved her hitting efficiency almost 200 points in her sophomore season for the Warriors. She also set the school single-season record for ace serves with 76 and was the team-leader in kills, averaging nearly three kills per set.

UWA coach Tabitha Turner said, “Carly is going to be a great addition to our lineup. She is an outstanding player and will play a pivotal role as we move this program forward in the coming year.”
West Alabama was 21-11 overall last season and finished fourth in the Gulf South Conference.

Wehling said she liked West Alabama’s campus in Livingston, Ala. “The campus has a small-town feel which I have been used to all my life. The coaching staff at UWA is very easy to relate to and they gave me an opportunity I couldn’t refuse.”

Wehling said the school has an outstanding athletic training program which is what she plans on studying.

Indian Hills coach Lyndsey Lyon expects Wehling to continue to improve at the next level. “Carly was a great asset to our team,” said Lyon. “She was strong as a passer and hitter and was our go-to player at crucial times. She was a leader on the court and academically, and she’ll be a great fit for UWA next fall.”

Wehling also had a successful high school career, earning first-team all-conference honors three times and playing on teams that won back-to-back state titles.
