Ottumwa -- Finding the home court to their liking, the Indian Hills volleyball team swept all three sets against the visiting William Penn junior varsity Monday night at the Net Center. The Warriors won the first two sets by identical 25-12 scores and struggled a little before pulling out the third set, 25-20.
The opening set was tight early with the Warriors expanding a 7-5 lead on the strength of five straight service points by Mariah Hopkins. IHCC closed out the set with four straight service points by Carly Wehling and a winner by Thamara Nunes.
In the second set, Indian Hills had a slim 14-12 advantage when Chelsey Taylor served 11 straight points on a variety of serves to close out the visitors.
IHCC was unable to take the lead for good in the final set until the Warriors went up 20-19. It was 21-20 when the Warriors tallied the final four points to close out the Statesmen.
Wehling, Hopkins and Taylor each had three ace serves for IHCC. Wynter Davis and Wehling led in kills with five apiece. Setter Bibiany Hammes had 24 assists and Nunes led the team with 19 digs.
Indian Hills will take a 3-2 season record on the road this week as the Warriors travel to Cheyenne, Wyoming for a tournament hosted by Laramie County CC. They'll play two matches on Friday and two more on Saturday. Indian Hills returns home to face Ellsworth CC on Sept. 8.
