West Burlington, IA -- The IHCC volleyball team, under first-year head coach Lyndsey Lyon, won three of four matches in a season-opening tournament hosted by Southeastern CC.
The Warriors won all three sets against Mineral Area CC in their first match on Friday before dropping a match to Iowa Central, 3-1. They came back the following day to defeat Kirkwood CC, 3-1, before knocking off host school Southeastern in three straight sets.
Against Mineral Area, Emily Eswonia, Peyton Crosser and Shelby Lauterbach led the IHCC net play with four kills each. Cris Vosconcoles had six blocks, Jessica Black 11 digs and Crosser four ace serves to pace the Warriors in those statistical categories.
Indian Hills dropped the first two sets against Iowa Central, rebounded to win the third set, 25-18, but couldn't continue the momentum in the next set in sustaining the loss.
Carla Novaes and Eswonia combined for 25 kills for the Warriors and Black had 21 digs.
The Warriors overcame a slow start against Kirkwood, losing the first set before reeling off wins in the next three sets to beat the Eagles. Again, it was Novaes and Eswonia who led the attack with 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Setter Kaylee Scholten had 32 assists and Black provided 27 digs. Crosser had three ace serves.
IHCC rounded out the tourney with a straight-set win over SCC. Crosser had 11 kills and Eswonia 10. Scholten had 41 assists and Black recorded 17 digs.
