IHCC Survives in Thriller

Ottumwa -- When sophomore Victoria Ita's kill landed in the opposite corner of the court on the Kirkwood side of the net, it allowed Indian Hills to complete a thrilling comeback and notch a hard-earned win against the Eagles at the Net Center on Thursday night.  Ita's winner came on IHCC's first match-point and gave the Warriors a 17-15 win in the fifth set and a satisfying 3-2 victory.

Trailing early in the final set 7-1, Indian Hills finally got even at 12-all.  Kirkwood regained the lead at 15-14 and served for the match.  Emily Eswonia kept the Warriors alive with a kill to tie the score at 15 and Peyton Crosser served the next two points as IHCC completed the rally with the Ita winner.

The Warriors got off to a fast start with a 25-21 first-set win.  Kirkwood regrouped and won the next two sets, 25-21 and 28-26.  Then, it was the Warriors' turn to regroup as they pounded out a 25-14 win in the fourth set to send the match to a decisive set.

Ailime deFreitas had six of the Warriors' whopping total of 19 aces and she had 65 assists as well.  The duo of Carla Novaes and Cristiane Vosconsoles had six blocks each and Eswonia had 34 digs and Jessica Black 28.  Novaes led the team with 18 kills, but Ita had the match-clincher.

It was the second win this season against Kirkwood for the Warriors who will see the Eagles again late in the regular season in a match in Cedar Rapids on Oct. 23.  Indian Hills is idle until traveling to Council Bluffs to take on Iowa Western next Tuesday.
